Motherhood = going crazy one day at a time!

Selfish or Not?

I'm just interested to see what everyone else thinks about this mother of the Octuplets.  Keep in mind that she already has 6 kids at home,  lives with her parents, has no job, no education and no spouse to help share the load.  So what do you think?

Here is what I think:  I'm not fond of the Doctor who would transfer SIX embryo back to her uterus.  Especially when the CDC recommendation is no more than 4.  In other parts of the world Doctors can loose their medical license if they transfer more than one.    I also don't like the fact that Cal. tax payers are going to pick up the tab for this little adventure she has embarked upon.

Now don't get me wrong.  I think that IVF is wonderful technology.  I have been the beneficiary of it twice now, but I don't think that a single mother of 6 who isn't self sufficient should having this many children.  At some point I wonder when the state is going to have to step in and take some of the children due to neglect.  It's almost inevitable when there is only one parent to go around to 14 kids who are going to have very special needs.

I agree Brooke.
Most couples in a loving relationship would find it tough to manage 14 children.
I don't know what she was thinking.
I'd like to hear her reasoning.

tough to say. I'm sure the media isn't giving us her side of the story. I am more prone to blame the doctor though. If she'd have only had one or twins, like the last six times, no one would even be batting an eye. she does sound like she's got some 'issues' though. what woman in their right mind wants 7+ kids w/ no one to help?

The whole thing doesn't make sense to me. I can't wrap my head around how she thinks she can make it work...besides the obvious fact that she is going to need to collect some of that Cali tax money. I listened to her last night and think that she lives in some warped sense of reality. And lets be honest...I can't handle my three with a husband. How the hell she thinks she can do 14? Give me a break!!!! I feel bad for the kids.

It's tough... One one hand, I don't want the medical profession to be able to decide how many kids are too many to have. Although it's certainly not right for me (or most people), there are some couples who seem to do really well with a very large family. That being said, I think transferring eight embryos into a woman who seems to have no trouble conceiving is insane. You wish people would be able to see their limitations and have a realistic sense of what is right. Ryan likes to say "Common sense isn't so common," I'd have to agree on this one.

I think the lady must be a lunatic. So. It was 6 embroyos and 2 split? I know that it does happen, but it's hard to believe that 2 of the 6 split.

I'm super excited that we get to pay for their medical bills....what was their estimate? 1.8 million? At least you know she'll have a million sponsors that give her everything else!
